The natives Borneo Dusun, Kadazan, Murut say that a Bam-bar-raon (bum-buh-ray-on) or Bam-ba-rayon is the spirit of rice plant. The collective name for rice spirits. Anyhow the exact number of Bambaraon is not known.  All Bambaraons are immortal. A spirit does leave ones presence in a rice plant. When a spirit leaves a rice plant it causes a poor harvest. A rice plant may die due to diseases and rice fruits turn up empty.

[Note:- Pictures below were the last seven Bambaraon goddesses (from 42 Bambaraon goddesses representing almost all Districts of the State of Sabah) for the search of the finest goddess of the goddesses at the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association Center at Penampang, Sabah 31st May 2015. Mind you, the 35 other Bambaraon goddesses, not in the picture, are veeeery...very  pretty too, believe me.]

{Nota:- Gambar-gambar di bawah ialah tujuh ratu Bambaraon (dari 42 ratu Bambaraon yang hampir kesemuanya mewakili Daerah di Negeri Sabah) dalam Pesta Kaamatan di Pusat Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association Penampang, Sabah 31 Mei 2015. Perhatian semua... yang 35 ratu Bambaraon itu, tiada dalam gambar, pun saaaaaaangat lawa semua bah.}

Anyway sometime in the olden days you may find at some rice fields, at a time a rice plant is starting to flowers, where tools in form of beautifully crafted wooden machetes or heavy knives and sticks, hang on specially made sticks. These tools were offered by priestess to be used by Bambaraon to protect the rice plant or ward off evil spirits, and to get rid of animals and birds that come to cause damages to the rice crops. Even there is offering of drinking water placed inside a shellfish shell for Bambaraon. You'll be able to see that 'shell cup' because a beautiful thin bamboo pole (Schizostachyum spp.) (with its end weaved into 'Y' form as a holder), 'planted' vertically on the ground to elevate this drinking 'shell cup' above highest tips of rice plants.

Bambaraon (Goddesses) for Rice Post-Harvest (Kaamatan)
Festival 2015 Borneo Sabah
Bambaraon, according to some Kelawat Kota Belud version, is the invisible human of the rice plant. Only in the 50s, just after a completion of harvesting rice that every rice farmers will gladly tell everybody to come for a harvest feast at ones home, to thank Bambaraon. This practice is seldom done now because people are buying rice straight from the mall. These people leave country side to the town and live on housing areas. The new generation of Kadazan-Dusun-Murut people don't grow rice any-more because many now don't know how to grow rice and many do not own any rice field anyway. Nowadays trending is the increasing number of rice fields being planted with houses instead and Bambaraon leave when there no more rice plant in the rice field.

Maka akibatnya tiada meraya selesai menuai padi kerana tiada padi selesai dituai. Tiada Bambaraon kerana sawah kini ditanam dengan bangunan pula. Jadi semangat padi lari.

Usually starting a feast for Bambaraon is by a priestess rendering a thanksgiving prayer (speaking verbally to Bambaraon) and offering ceremony tokens (food and material kinds) presented to Bambaraon that are present in rice plants. Where as Bambaraon that have left a rice plant, like for reason were swept away by flood or blown by wind, are pleaded to return back. Bambaraon presence in a rice plant result in a good harvest. One common entry prayer in this ceremony is the calling of Bam-ba-ra-on named Po-ko-ti-ru, Ula-ula and Ukad-ukad.

Representatives of a village may announce to another villages to come to a feasting and merry making events. Any rice farmers in a village may announce to other farmers in the same village to come for a feasting event at ones house. Then there goes eating and drinking. Feasting may extended to days. Feasting is all about thanking Bambaraon. This was in the past years, in the year 50s.

Bambaraon Tinatalan
(Valencia Ann Primus -Kota Kinabalu)
In the early days there was no beauty contest or finding for the one finest of all Bambaraon. A gathering for eating and drinking is all about thanksgivings to rice spirits. Nowdays search for Unduk Ngadau (Harvest Festival Goddess) is one of the important program in all community level harvest festival celebration all over Sabah. This is about finding the goddess of the Dusun-Kadazan-Murut tribes for the year. These goddesses are Bambaraon.

Bambaraon Pinutungan
(Natasha Aprillia Benggon -Inanam)
One cannot be simply the Bambaraon goddess but her parents must be native Kadazan-Dusun-Murut or one of her parent is a native. Anyway, there is no necessity for DNA testing to prove your maternal or paternal native status. However not all Kadazan-Dusun-Murut female can join this Bambaraon goddess search. Natives Moslem female Kadazan-Dusun-Murut applicant wishes to opt out due to legal and conscientious compliance issues.

For the past decades the government and businesspersons had been the main sponsors for the Sabah State level rice harvest celebration. Visitors coming can be more than hundred thousands people for the two days event. Moreover the two days rice celebration for Bambaraon are Public Holiday in the state of Sabah.

Goddess Bambaraon search is not something about symmetrical face or aesthetic traits. In fact all natives Kadazan-Dusun-Murut women are very beautiful, lovely and nice. Local men when thinking to take a natives as their bride, provided lucky and have the privilege to make a choice, are being spoiled, and in big trouble because you just cannot decide which one to choose with your eyes open. You're a bit better off if you just close your eyes and decide because all natives Kadazan Dusun Murut women are very beautiful and pretty. Believe me.

Organizer normally is looking for characters like polite, articulate, poise, nice presentation during the catwalk and traditional costume wear. Perhaps the organizer is also looking for a good mind, that each participant has, especially to on going concern like sustainability and consolidation of Kadazan Dusun Murut (KDM) culture,  based on the topic posed to participants during the question and answer part. Mind you those KDM kids borned in the late 1990 to present, especially in the town area, are unable to converse in their mother dialect. Their parents either speak Bahasa Melayu or English.

Anyway the finest Bambaraon goddess for this event receives additional incentives besides tens of thousands dollars of prices, gifts and travel sponsorships amounting to more than RM50,000.00 [cash money RM6,000.00 (six thousands MYR)], an education scholarship for college studies, course of your own liking. All six runners-up receive between RM5,000.00 - RM1,500.00 and consolation for all the rest is RM1,000.00 cash, not including other prizes.
